Teacher’s Journal 3 : Dylan
In my senior year of high school, after I had completed my college applications, I suddenly found myself with more time than I knew what to do with. One day, I stumbled upon a website that piqued my interest. I thought to myself, “Couldn’t I do this?” and I started making chainmail.
Traditionally, in most of Europe and Japan, chainmail was used to protect against knives and swords. These days, the main purpose is decorative — clothing, sculpture, fashion. I made jewelry.
After a few months, I began to sell some of my work to friends and family friends. I realized I was making a decent amount of money, so I decided to use more valuable materials like silver and niobium. On a family trip, I showed a few of my pieces to the owner of a local jewelry store. She liked them so much that she offered to sell them in her shop on consignment; she offered to pay me twice what I was charging people myself. She took almost every piece of jewelry I had made and put it on display. It was pretty cool. Every couple months, I’d get a sizeable check in the mail.
When I graduated from high school, I went travelling in South America for six months. In that time, I fell out of practice with my hobbies and I have not since had the time to start up again. I still have all my chainmail materials in storage in America. I must have a few finished pieces around as well.
高校3年生のとき、大学の申し込みを終わらせてからというもの、急に時間を持て余すようになってしまいました。そんなある日、僕の興味をかき立てるウェブサイトに偶然たどり着きました。「これって、僕にもできるかも？」と思い、‘Chainmail’「鎖かたびら」を作るようになりました。
鎖かたびらは、かつてはヨーロッパや日本では剣や刀などから身を守るのに使われましたが、最近では衣類、彫刻、ファッションなどの装飾に使われています。僕はアクセサリーを作ることにしました。
何ヶ月か経って、作品を自分の友達や家族の友人に売るようになりました。かなり儲かったので、もう少し高価なシルバーやニオブを使うことにしました。家族と旅行に行ったときに、その地域にある宝石店の女性オーナーに僕の作品をいくつか見せたところ、とても気に入ってくれてオーナーのお店で委託で売りたいと言ってくれました。その上、自分自身で売っていた価格の2倍を支払ってくれると。その女性オーナーは、僕の作った作品をほぼ全部引き取ってくれ、陳列してくれました。かなり嬉しかったです。そして、2～3ヶ月ごとにたくさんの売り上げが届きました。
高校を卒業してから、6ヶ月ほど南米に旅行に出かけました。その間にアクセサリー作りをやめてしまい、その後も再開していません。今でもアメリカの実家の倉庫の中にはアクセサリー作りのための道具と、作品も何点かは残っていると思います。
